“Farm to School and Community: How Dietetics Professionals Can Get Involved”

(this session is co-sponsored with the Public Health and Community Nutrition DPG)Session Description - This session will describe the farm-to-school movement, program models, and outcomes. It will access information on current research, programs, and policies steering farm-to-school initiatives in the United States. In addition it will utilize information and tools to create farm-to-school programs or adapt this approach to other settings.

President’s Lecture
“Freedom from Want: The Human Right to Adequate Food”
Speaker: Dr. George KentSunday, Sept. 17, 2006 9:00 am – 10:30 am
Session Description - Can society design food safety nets that will be sustainable and meet the needs of the very poor? This provocative question will be the focus of the Presidents' Lecture. George Kent, PhD, Professor of Political Science at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, will present the lecture.
CPE Level 1 Suggested LNCs: 4070Dr. George Kent, a professor of Political Science at the University of Hawaii, will be the President’s Lecture speaker at FNCE 2006. Dr. Kent studies and writes about food as a human right and is the author of Freedom from Want: The Human Right to Adequate Food. He has worked as a consultant with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and several civil society organizations, and is part of the Working Group on Nutrition, Ethics, and Human Rights of the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition. He is Co-Convener of the Commission on International Human Rights of the International Peace Research Association. He has a special focus on child nutrition. In his words: “My professional work is addressed to finding remedies to social problems, especially finding ways to strengthen the weak in the face of the strong”.

The HEN reception was held jointly with the Public Health and Community Nutrition DPG. Member enjoyed delicious food and the company of friends and colleagues at the Indigo Restaurant in Honolulu.

HEN Post FNCE Farm Tour to Paikuli-Stride Farm
Join other HEN members on a tour of Mark Paikuli-Stride's taro farm in Kailua on the windward side of the island of Oahu. His non-profit organization, Aloha Aina Health Center utilizes cultural immersion methods in farm-to-school programs in Hawaii. He also works with farmers on the production and procurement of locally produced foods for schools. Mark joins Marilyn Briggs as a speaker at the "Farm-to-School and Community: How Dietetics Professionals Can Get Involved" educational session co-sponsored by HEN and the Public Health and Community Nutrition DPG.
When: Wed., Sept. 20th, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Where: Vans will leave from the Waikiki Parc Hotel (across the street from the Sheraton Waikiki, FNCE co-headquarters hotel)
Meet at 8:45 am.
